Finding a corp you can trust is not a big deal; for normal operations, not a lot of trust is required. Of course, if you're going to fly your 50B officer fit ship with them, then a lot more is. But you're a rookie; you have little to lose.
As for the "honest" advice about low-sec; it was given by people who didn't cut it, simple as that.
In a few months of play, a rookie player is perfectly capable of going to low-sec and trying to kill other rookie players with less of a clue, and you'll find them. Sometimes you'll get clobbered by older players, sure, but if you're careful that's going to be preety damn rare.
Simple fact is that going to low-sec without the protection of a blob will make you a better player, and after you learn the ropes it will be much easier to get into a decent corporation too.
As for "young players cannot compete", that is total crap. I've at occasion been murdered by younger players on account of underestimating them. I've often killed older players when I was still relatively a noob because they underestimated me or played their cards wrong. Young players cannot compete is just a excuse for not trying to do so.
A good thing for you (or any newbie) would be to find someone with a actual clue to teach you a few things. That's what newbies lack more then SP or anything else.
Btw, PvP is cheap only when you do it in cheap ships - the T2 fit frigate is preety trivial to replace, but as you start flying bigger ships / T2 ships this changes a lot. I won't even talk about implants (but no reason to lose them in low-sec bar extreme lag/desync or smartbombs).
